* The fifth edition of India-Japan Maritime Bilateral Exercise ‘JIMEX-21’ is to be held in Arabian Sea from 6th to 8th October 2021.
* Aim: To develop common understanding of operational procedures and enhance inter-operability through conduct of multitude of advanced exercises.
* JIMEX series of exercises were introduced in January 2012 with special focus on maritime security cooperation.
* It involves weapon firings, cross-deck helicopter operations and complex surface, anti-submarine and air warfare drills will consolidate coordination developed by the two navies.
* The Nobel Prize for Physics has been awarded to scientists from Japan, Germany and Italy. Scientists Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann and Giorgio Parisi won the 2021 Nobel Prize for Physics for their "groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of complex physical systems".
* Manabe and Hasselmann were cited for their work in “the physical modeling of Earth’s climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming".
* The second half of the prize was awarded to Parisi for “the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales."
* The prestigious prize is worth 10 million Swedish crowns ($1.15 million) and is given by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

* First consignment of Geographical Indication (GI) tagged sweet dish Mihidana from Bardhaman, West Bengal has been exported to Kingdom of Bahrain.
* It is part of the effort to promote indigenous and GI tagged products of India globally.
* It was exported by APEDA registered M/S DM Enterprises, Kolkata.
* Mihidana sweet dish got GI tag in 2017.
* GI tag is a sign denoting a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.
* India has been chosen as the Partner Administration for Tax Inspectors Without Borders (TIWB) programme
* TIWB has launched its programme in Seychelles on 4th October 2021.
* India will be providing its Tax Expert in support of the initiative.
* TIWB: Joint initiative of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), since its launch in 2015.
* This is the sixth TIWB programme in which India has supported by providing Tax Expert
* B C Patnaik has been appointed as the Managing Director (MD) of insurance giant Life Insurance Corporation (LIC).
* He succeeded Mukesh Kumar Gupta, who completed his tenure on 30th September 2021.
* Prior to this, he served as secretary General at Council for Insurance Ombudsmen(CIO), Mumbai.

* Ministry of road, transport & highways launched a scheme for “Good Samaritans”.
* Scheme will be effective from October 15, 2021 and will run till March 31, 2026.
* Under the scheme, a cash award of Rs 5,000 will be provided per accident, to those saving the life of a road accident victim by rushing the person to hospital within the ‘golden hour’ of the accident.
* Cash award will be provided to motivate the general public in order to help the road accident victims in emergency situation.
* Cash award will also be accompanied with a certification of appreciation.
* Piramal Capital & Housing Finance Limited (PCHFL), has merged with debt-ridden Dewan Housing Finance (DHFL) after paying Rs 34,250 crore to the creditors of the troubled housing finance company.
* PCHFL has merged into DHFL with effect from September 30, 2021 pursuant to the reverse merger as contemplated under scheme of arrangement provided under the resolution plan, Piramal Enterprises said in a regulatory filing.
* Upon allotment of equity shares to PEL, DHFL will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of PEL.
* In January 2021, 94 per cent of the creditors of DHFL voted in favour of Piramal Group's resolution plan under the Insolvency Bankruptcy Code (IBC).
* Shakti Sinha, former bureaucrat and an academician who was also the Private Secretary to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, passed away.
* Mr. Sinha, a 1979-batch IAS officer, was also former Director of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML).
* Mr. Sinha worked closely with Vajpayee between 1996 and 1999, and had written a memoir titled Vajpayee: The Years That Changed India.
