In the following questions, two statements numbered I and II are given. On solving them, we get quantities I and II respectively. Solve for both the quantities and choose the correct option.

Quantity I: In a group, there are 25 men and 15 women. If the average income per day of the woman is Rs 120 and average income per day of the man is Rs 150 then what is the average income of each member of the group?

Quantity II: Rakhi deposited some money in bank for 3 years which offers compound interest. If Rakhi got Rs 115 and Rs 125 as an interest for 1st and 2nd year then how much interest she will get for third year?

    Solutions

    Quantity - I

    Average income of the group = 15 X 120) + (25 X 150/(15+25)

    = (1800 + 3750)/40 = 5550/40

    = Rs 138.75

    Quantity - II

In case of compound interest, we will get interest on the interest hence rate of interest offered by the bank = (125-115)/115 X 100 = 8.7%

    Hence interest obtained for the 3rd year = Rs (125 X 1.087) = Rs 135.875

The sum of ages of Ram, Raj and Roy is 63 years. 5 years ago, sum of ages of Ram and Roy was 32 years. 5 years from now, sum of ages of Raj and Roy will be 55 years. What is the present age of Ram?

    Solutions

    We have :

    Ram + Raj + Roy = 63 -- (1)

    (Ram - 5) + (Roy - 5) = 32

    Ram + Roy = 42 -- (2)

    From (1) and (2), Raj = 63 - 42 = 21 years.

    (Raj + 5) + (Roy + 5) = 55

    31 + Roy = 55

    or Roy = 24 years.

So, present age of Ram = 63 - Raj - Roy

    = 63 - 21 - 24 = 18 years.

A cistern can be filled by two pipes in 20 and 30 minutes respectively. Both pipes being opened, when must the first pipe be turned off so that the cistern may be filled in 10 minutes after closing the first pipe?

    Solutions

Portion of the cistern filled in 1 minute when both are open = 1/20 + 1/30 = 1/12

Hence, it takes 12 minutes to fill the cistern when both pipes are open

Let the first pipe be closed after x minutes. Now the cistern should fill in (x+10) minutes

For first x minutes, portion of the cistern filled = x/12

For the remaining (10) minutes, portion of the cistern filled = (10)/30 = 1/3

    x/12 + 1/3 = 1 or x+4 = 12 minutes or x = 8 minutes

The production of computers in January from three companies X, Y and Z is in the ratio of 5:8:7 and the cost of a computer is Rs.25000. If the difference of production of computers by company X and company Z is 500 in January, then what will be the cost of computers (in lakhs) produced by all the three companies in the same month?

    Solutions

    Let the production of computers by X, Y and Z = 5x, 8x and 7x respectively.

    Difference of production of company X and company Z = 7x - 5x = 500 (Given)

    x = 250

    Total computers produced = 5x + 8x + 7x = 20x = 20 * 250 = 5000

    Cost of all computers = 25000 * 5000 = 125,000,000 = Rs.1250 lakhs

  • Question 5/10

In a test, minimum passing percentage for girls and boys is 30% and 45% respectively. A boy scored 280 marks and failed by 80 marks. How many more marks did a girl require to pass in the test if she scored 108 marks?

    Solutions

    Let maximum marks be M.

Then passing marks for girls and boys = 0.3M and 0.45M respectively.

    280+80 = 0.45M

    => M = 800

    Passing marks for girls = 0.3 x 800 = 240

Hence the girl requires 240-108 = 132 more marks

A man has two types of alloys of copper and gold. In one, the percentage of copper is 70% and in other, the percentage of copper is 80%. In what respective ratio should he mixed both the alloys to get a final mixture in which the percentage of copper is 76%

    Solutions

So the ratio in which he should mix should be 4/6 or 2:3.

What approximate value will come in place of question mark (?) in the following questions? (You are not expected to calculate the exact value.)

    (?)2 + 5.053 = 27.932 - 37.01

    Solutions

    (?)2 ≈ 282 - 37 - 53

    = 784 - 37 - 125 = 622

    So, ? ≈ 25

What approximate value will come in place of question mark (?) in the following questions? (You are not expected to calculate the exact value.)

    24.95 x √120.99 = ? x √3025.04

    Solutions

    ? ≈ (25 x √121)/√3025

    = (25 x 11/55) = 5
