    30x: 25y = 3: 1

    As investment in Shares, which form 25% of the savings, is one third of the rent paid, the rent paid would be equivalent to 75% of total savings.

    If the income of Mr and Mrs. Sharma are 10x and 10yrespectively, then

    3x = 75% of (2x+ 1y)

    3x= 1.5x + 0.75y

    Or x:y=1 :2

    If investments in PPF was Rs.36,000 annually, then which of the following could be their average monthly expenses for entertainment, if one of them earned half as much as the other?

    The total savings = Rs.1,20,000

    Now there are two possibilities.

    Case (1):

    Mr.Sharma earns twice as much as Mrs. Sharma.

    then According to question,

    10x(0.1)+20x(0.2)=1,20,000

    x=24,000

    ∴ Entertainment = 24,000×2 = Rs.48,000

    Case (2):

    If Mr. Sharma earns half as much as Mrs. Sharma.

    10x(0.1)+ 5x(0.2) = 1,20,000

    ⇒2x = 120000 ⇒ x = 60,000

    ∴ Expenses on entertainment = Rs.1,20,000

    ∴ Monthly expenses in the first case is Rs.4000 and in the second case is Rs.10,000.

    Suppose that the income of Mr. Sharma and Mrs. Sharma are 10x and 10y respectively.

    Total savings =2x+y 

    A.T.Q.,

    ∴ 20 % of (2x+ y)  =30 % of 10y

     (2x+ y)=15y

     x = 7y
