Chandragupta-I was son of Ghatotkacha and is considered to be the real founder of Gupta Empire. He was most powerful monarch and assumed the title of Maharajadhiraj. The earlier kings were given the titles Maharaja only. Chandragupta -I can be called the first independent ruler of the Gupta Dynasty.

Among the rulers of the Gupta dynasty, Chandragupta I issued gold coins. He married the daughter of the Lichchhavi clan and obtained the kingdom of Vaishali and established the second Magadha Empire.

Chandragupta had made the image of Kumaradevi on the coins and the figure of the Singhwahini Devi Durga on the back.

Chandragupta II (also known as Chandragupta Vikramaditya) was one of the most powerful emperors of the Gupta Empire in India. His rule spanned c.380 - c.415 CE during which the Gupta Empire reached its peak. Art, architecture, and sculpture flourished, and the cultural development of ancient India achieved new heights. The period of prominence of the Gupta dynasty is often referred to as the "Golden Age" of India.

The Guptas minted gold coins in abundance. These coins were depicted with the images of rulers in various pose. Some coins depicted Samudragupta playing veena. Gupta coins, mainly the silver ones, carried the images of Garuda, a mythical bird of Hindu tradition. These coins are found in large numbers in western India. In some cases, the Garuda is replaced by a peacock.

Chess is one of the earliest games that evolved into a four-player war game called Chaturanga. It is the Sanskrit name for a battle array mentioned in the Indian epic Mahabharata. The origin of the game of chess during the Gupta period is in India.

The first evidence of sati is found in Bhanugupta's inscription found in 510 AD, which mentions Gopraj Senapati's woman being a sati. The historical place called Eran is located in the Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh.

The famous Chinese traveller and scholar Xuanzang (Huen Tsang) visited Bhinmal around 641 A.D.

Pulakeshin II defeated Harsha on the banks of Narmada in the winter of 618-619.

During the reign of Harshavardhana, the famous Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang had traveled to India and studied Yoga at Nalanda University. At that time the patriarch here was Acharya Sheelabhadra. Hiuen Tsang was called the prince of travelers and the present Shakyamuni.

After his accession to the throne he merged the two kingdoms of Thanesar and Kannauj and shifted his capital to Kannauj
