The Damodar river valley contain storehouses or coal seems, the richest, largest and most productive coalfields of India. The Damodar valley coal occurring in Damuda series of the lower Gondwana rocks is noted for exceptionally rich coal deposits.

Of the four major types of coal, 80-90% in anthracite, 55-65% in bituminous, 45-55% in lignite, 35-45% carbon content in peat. The high carbon content in coal is an indicator of high inflammable capacity.

In India deposits of bauxite are found mainly in the Amarkantak plateau, Maikal hills and the plateau regions of Bilaspur-Katni.

Hematite ore is the most important industrial iron ore in terms of the quantity used, but has a slightly lower iron content than magnetite. (50-60 per cent).
