The temples built by Chandel kings in Khajuraho, situated in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, shows the excellence of Chandel architecture. These temples were built between 950 - 1050 AD. The Kandariya Mahadev Temple is the best among the temples here.

The Kailash temple of Ellora is considered a wonder of rock architecture. This world famous temple of Dravidian style was built by Rashtrakuta ruler Krishna-I.

Although the importance of Brahmin religion was at the time of Rashtrakuta rulers, but Jainism was more propagated than Brahmin religion and it also got state patronage. The Guru of the Rashtrakuta ruler Amoghavarsha was Jain acharya Jinsen who composed the Adipuran.

Ajanta's paintings caves has various types of flowers - decorations of leaves, trees and animal figures and depicting statues of Buddha and Bodhisattvas have been used as descriptive scenes for stories taken from Jataka. These paintings mostly depict Jataka tales.

The Sun Temple of Modhera is located in Gujarat. It was built by King Bhimdev I of Solanki dynasty.

Jagannath Temple is located in Puri district of Odisha state. the famous Lingaraj Temple (Bhubaneswar) and the Sun Temple (Puri) are located in Konark. Both temples are built in the Nagara style.

The Gandhara school of art came into existence in Mahayana sect. Mahayana sect believes in idols worship of Buddha and Bodhisattvas. The Gandhara School of art had also developed in first century AD along with Mathura School during reign of Kushana emperor Kanishka.

The Third Buddhist council was convened in about 250 BCE at Asokarama in Pataliputra, supposedly under the patronage of Emperor Ashoka. The council is recognized and known to both the Theravada and Mahayana schools, though its importance is central only to the Theravada.
