India has 52 lakh kilometres of the road network, which is the second largest road network in the world. In the field of transport, roadways have a leading position. About 65% of freight and 80% passenger traffic is carried by the roads.

There are two UNESCO World Heritage Sites on IR viz. the Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus and the Mountain railways of India. Mountain railways of India is not contiguous, but consists of three separate railway lines located in different parts of the country viz. the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway; the Nilgiri Mountain Railway; and the Kalka-Shimla Railway.

The Golden Quadrilateral Project relates to the highway. Under this project, 4 metropolitan cities of the country were being connected by road.

Pradhanmantri Bharat Jodo Pariyojna is an ambitious scheme of Indian Government which is related to the development of highways. Under this project, tourist places and economically important places will be connected by corridors built on (BOT - Build, Operate, Transfer) principle. This project envisages construction of 4376 km road.

The Konkan Railways passes through 3 states of India - Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka. It runs along the Indian west coast parallel to Arabian Sea and Western Ghats. It is an extremely beautiful and scenic route running from Maharashtra till Karnataka.

East-West Corridor connects Silchar to Porbandar and the North South Corridor links Srinagar to Kanyakumari. They cross each other at Jhansi (Uttar Pradesh). That is why Jhansi is considered as the junction of North-South and East-West Corridors.

An Indian rail network is one of the worlds largest railway networks. Vivek Express is the longest route on the Indian Railways network, in terms of distance and time, and is the 9th longest in the world. It travels 4,273 km, making it the longest-run in terms of total time and distance.

There are 18 railway zones in India. The new railway zone - Southern Coast Railway - will be headquartered in Visakhapatnam it is the 18th zone in the country.

Jawahar Tunnel or Banihal Tunnel is a road tunnel in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. It is maintained by Border Road Organisation (BRO).
