The coal deposits in India are primarily concentrated in the Gondwana sediments occurring mainly in the eastern and central parts of Peninsular India, although Gondwana coal deposits also occur in Assam and Sikkim in North Eastern part of the country.

Coalmining in India first started in the Raniganj Coalfield. Regular mining started in 1820, led by an agency house, Alexander & Co. In 1835, Prince Dwarkanath Tagore bought over the collieries and Carr, Tagore and Company led the field.

Namchik- Namphuk coal fields are situated at Changland district of Arunachal Pradesh.

Chota Nagpur plateau is extended over Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal. It has 80%contribution to India's total coal Production.
