Ruby requested me to lend her Rs. 1000 the next day.
    Solutions
Options A and B are ruled out because "the next day" is a conversion of "tomorrow" when sentence is changed to indirect narration from direct narration. In option B, the pronoun "her" is not changed to "me" which again makes it incorrect choice.

Option C is incorrect because the pronoun "her" is not changed to "me". Only option D follows the rules correctly.

He said to me, “What time do the banks open and close?”

    Solutions

The given sentence is an interrogative sentence. Therefore, the reporting verb will be changed to “asked”. Since it is a WH-question, we don’t need a conjunction here as “what” will act as a connector. The sentence is in simple present tense, therefore, it will change to simple past tense. Also, we will convert the interrogative sentence into a simple sentence (Subject followed by a verb). Hence, option A is the correct answer.

Kanika said, “Can you help me in lifting this box?” and I said “No.”
    Solutions

The given sentence is in Direct Speech because it quotes actual words. Therefore, it must be changed into Indirect Speech.

Also, the first part of the sentence is interrogative.

To convert interrogative sentences into indirect speech, follow the following rules along with the above-mentioned rules:

    • The reporting verb ‘said’ is changed to ‘asked’.

    • If the reporting speech is having the reporting verb (can) at it its start, then if' is used in place of that.

    • The present tense (can) is changed to the past tense (could).

    • The pronoun ‘me’ is changed to ‘her’.

The second part of the sentence contains 'reply' to the question asked by Kanika. We will use the conjunction ‘and’ to connect the two parts of the question. Also, the verb ‘could’ will be used to maintain parallelism.

Therefore, the sentence in Indirect Speech will be :- Kanika asked if I could help her in lifting that box and I replied that I could not.

Hence, option C is the correct answer.

    Solutions

The given sentence is in Direct Speech because it quotes actual words. Therefore, it must be changed into Indirect Speech.

Also, in the given sentence, Harsh has given a suggestion to conduct a virtual meeting. Hence, ‘suggested’ is the apt reporting verb here. We use the gerund form of the verb after ‘suggested’, hence, ‘conducting’ is the correct verb.

Therefore, the sentence in Indirect Speech will be :- Harsh suggested conducting the virtual meeting.

Hence, option A is the correct answer.

“I don’t know the way to the airport. Do you?” the taxi driver asked her.

    Solutions

The given sentence is in Direct Speech because it quotes actual words. Therefore, it must be changed into Indirect Speech. Therefore the following rules must be followed:

The reporting verb is in the past tense (asked), the tense of the verbs in the reported speech will be changed into their corresponding past tense. (present simple to past simple)

Direct speech may consist of statement + question. Normally each requires its own introductory verb.

The second part of the sentence is an interrogative sentence. The reporting verb ‘said’ is changed to ‘asked’.

If the Interrogative sentence begins with the Auxiliary Verb / Helping Verb, the connective “Whether or if” is used to join it. So there should be “if” after “asked”.

“He” comes according to “the taxi driver” and “she” according to “her”.

A full stop is placed at the end of the sentence instead of a mark of interrogation.

Therefore, the sentence in Indirect Speech will be:

The taxi driver said he didn’t know the way to the airport and asked her if she did.

    Hence option B is correct.
