Soaps are formed by simple esters by saponification. In the process of saponification, it converts the fat, oil, or lipid into soap by the action of heat. In this process aqueous alkali like NaOH, KOH are used for saponification.
Aqueous alkali (Sodium hydroxide) NaOH produces hard soap.
Aqueous alkali (Potassium hydroxide) KOH produces soft soap.
