  • Question 1/30
    1 / -0.33

A tank can be filled by 2 pipes in 25 and 30 minutes resp. Both pipes are opened together for certain time, but being clogged, only 7/12 and 9/10 of the full quantity of water flows through them. The obstructions then were somehow removed. The remaining tank gets filled in 4 minutes. How longer it was before the full flow began?
    Solutions
    LCM of 25 and 30 is 150.
Let the two pipes be A and B.
Let total work be 150 units and let x be the time for which taps were clogged.
    Work done by A in 1 min = 150/25= 6 units
    Work done by B in 1 min= 150/30= 5 units
    Effective work in 1 min=6+5= 11 units
Since both pipes worked well for 4 minutes, units filled in 4 minutes = 11X4 = 44 units.
    Therefore, (6 X 7/12 + 5 X 9/10) x + 44 = 150
    Or x = 13.25
  • Question 2/30

P and Q can do a project in 25 and 50 days respectively. In how many days can they complete 18% of the project if they work together?
    Solutions
    According to the question:
P and Q can do a project in 25 and 50 days respectively.
Let us assume total unit of work available is 50 (LCM of 25 & 50)
And, P does 2 unit of work daily to get it completed in 25 days
Likewise, Q does 1 unit of work daily.
Therefore, total work done by them in 1 day=3 unit
Now, no. of days requires to complete 18% of the project if they work together
    18% of 50) / 3
    9/3=3 days
Hence the correct answer is option B
  • Question 3/30

Two boats started travelling from the same point but in different directions. One of the boats is in the direction of the current and the other is against it. The boat travelling in the direction of the current has a top speed 2kmph higher than the other boat and the speed of current is 3kmph. If the slower and faster boats take 4 and 3 hours respectively to cover the same distance, find the ratio of their speeds?
    Solutions
Let the speed of the slower boat be x
Speed of the faster boat = x+2
Let the speed of the current be y
    Effective speed of slower boat = x – y
Effective speed of faster boat = x+2+y
    Let the distance be D
    The time taken by Slower boat = 4 = D/x-y ….1
    Time taken by the faster boat = 3 = D/x+2+y ….2
    Diving 1 by 2
    4/3 = (D/x-y)/ (D/x+2+y)
    4/3 = (x+2+y)/(x-y)
    4x – 4y = 3x + 3y + 6
    X – 7y = 6
    X – 21 = 6
    X = 27kmph
    X + 2 = 29kmph
    Speed ratio = 27:29
  • Question 4/30

  • Question 11/30

Two mixtures A and B are taken which contains water and alcohol in the ratio 7: 5 and 3: 2 respectively. Total quantity of mixture B is 5 litre. Some mixture of A is taken out and mixed with B such that now the ratio of water and alcohol in B becomes 17:12. If 10 litres of A is remaining now, then find initially what quantity of mixture A was taken.

    Solutions
    In mixture A,
     Water : Alcohol = 7: 5
    In mixture B,
     Water : Alcohol =3: 2
toatal quanity of misture B= 5 litre
    so water= 3 litre
    alcohol=2 litre
If ‘x’ litre of A is taken out then,
     Water taken out = 7x/12
     Alcohol taken out = 5x/12
Now, the ratio of water and alcohol in mixture B becomes 17: 12
     Water: alcohol = (3+ 7x/12) : (2+ 5x/12)
     17 : 12 =(3+ 7x/12) : (2+ 5x/12)

Given that remaining mixture A = 10 litres
     Initial quantity of A = 10 + 24 = 34 litres

A and B undertake to do a piece of work for Rs. 720. A alone can do it in 8 days and B alone can do it in 12 days. With the help of C, they finish it in 4 days. Then the share of C (in Rupees) is how much?
    Solutions
    A’s work for 1 day = 1/8
    B’s work for 1 day = 1/12
    A’s 4 days work = 4/8 =1/2
    B’s 4days work = 4/12 = 1/3
    Hence remaining work = 1- (1/2+1/3) = 1 – 5/6 = 1/6
Therefore if A and B finish the work in 4 days with the help of C, then C’s work for 4 days will be 1/6.
    Hence the ratio of works of A, B and C = 1/2 : 1/3 : 1/6 = 3 : 2: 1
    Therefore C’s share in Rs 720 = 720 ×1/6 = 120 Rs

The average of five numbers is 27. If one number is excluded. The average becomes 25. The excluded number is
    Solutions
Average of five numbers = 27
Hence total of these five numbers = 27×5 = 135
Now if one number is excluded remaining numbers = 4
Average of remaining four numbers = 25
    Sum of remaining 4 numbers = 25×4 =100

A series is given with one term missing. Choose the correct alternative from the given ones that will complete the series.

    ?, HI, OP, WX
    Solutions
There are 26 alphabets in English and if we assign numbers to each and every alphabet starting from ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C etc., it will appear to be:
    A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4……. likewise, till Z=26
    The pattern is:
    H → (+1) → I, ⇐(-6) ⇐ O → (+1) → P, ⇐ (-7) ⇐ W → (+1) → X

By observing the above pattern it is clear that:
    B→ (+1) → C ⇐ (-5) ⇐ H → (+1) → I

Thus, BC is the missing term.

Hence, option B is the correct answer.

A series is given with one term missing. Select the correct alternative from the given ones that will complete the series.

    A, C, H, S, ?
    Solutions
    A + 2 = C
    C + 5 = H (5 = 2 x 2 + 1)
    H + 11 = S (11 = 5 x 2 + 1)
    Thus, S + 23 = P (23 = 11 x 2 + 1)
Thus the next term in the series is P
Hence, option B is the correct answer.
