In your class if a student although being capable of grasping the concepts of language fails to follow the facts and concepts in his conversations, he fails to develop his speaking skills. Which approach you would follow in order to overcome this problem?

    Solutions

The communicative approach may be defined as a technique, where the target is to develop communicative competence. Its aim is to develop both accuracy and fluency in language learning. Here emphasis is on 'language in use' rather than on 'language as structure'. It is based on the idea that learning language successfully comes through having to communicate real meaning. When learners are involved in real communication, their natural strategies for language acquisition will be used, and this will allow them to learn to use the language.

The bilingual method of foreign language teaching was developed by C.J. Dodson (1967) as a counterpart of the audiovisual method. In both methods the preferred basic texts are dialogues accompanied by a picture strip. In contrast to the audiovisual method and the direct method, the printed text is made available from the very beginning and presented simultaneously with the spoken sentence to allow learners to see the shape of individual words. Also, from the outset meanings are conveyed bilingually as utterance equivalents in the manner of the sandwich technique, thus avoiding meaningless and hence tedious repetition of the learning input.
In language teaching, when students do guided composition activities, they are given an outline in words or pictures to help them write. These may include giving them key words, ideas and support so that they can create a good piece of writing. This is generally done in small groups mentored by the teacher and the learners are expected to learn from as well as support their peers.

Free composition is that euphoric stage where the student has mastered sufficient language skills and organization to be able to handle the writing of a chosen topic when given only a specific amount of time and a definite length.

A literary text can be used in a language class for teaching and learning of

    1) language functions and new vocabulary

    2) reformulation of rules

    3) learning disabilities

    4) developing pronunciation

    Solutions

Literature can also help you better understand yourself and others. Readers will perceive themselves differently after reading literature that reflects the experiences of others. Furthermore, understanding cultures teaches readers about the ties that bind people all over the world. People who learn to understand and appreciate different cultures are more likely to realise that people all over the world have similar emotions, experiences, and problems. Literary work also aids in the development of imagination. The power of imagination is both creative and constructive. Every aspect of daily life necessitates the use of one's imagination. People imagine as they converse and interact with others, make choices and decisions, examine news reports, or evaluate advertising and entertainment (Sloan in Kelly 1996). Higher-order thinking skills are inextricably linked to creative thought and imagination. Literature is necessary for education.
