Pindari was a warrior community. They had an important position in the Maratha temporary army. Till 1807, the attacks of the Pindaris remained confined between the Yamuna and the Narmada region. Then, they expanded their attacks from Mirzapur to Madras and from Orissa to Rajasthan and Gujarat. In 1812, they attacked Bundelkhand, in 1815, from the Nizam's kingdom to Madras, and in 1816 on the territories of the northern governments. Due to this, the Pindaris were recognised as robbers. Lord Hastings created split among the Pindari chieftains in 1817 with the aim of getting rid of the notorious community and sought help from the Native States against them by signing treaties.
