On 13 April 1919, the Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place in Amritsar. General Dyer fired indiscriminately on a public meeting to protest the arrest of Dr Satpal and Saifuddin Kichlu. According to the government report, 379 people were killed and according to the Congress Committee, about 1000 people were killed. Shankaran Nair resigned from Viceroy's Executive Council membership in protest of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. In protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, Mahatma Gandhi returned the title of 'Kaiser a-Hind', Jamnalal Bajaj the title of 'Rai Bahadur' and Ravindra Nath Tagore the title of 'Sir'.
